I got my eyes on you Chuck!!!!!!
While Punxsutawney Phil receives most of the attention on Groundhog Day, New York has its own official weather-predicting rodent at the Staten Island Zoo.
Staten Island Chuck, whose real name is Charles G. Hogg, comes from a long line of meteorologically gifted groundhogs.
He has been predicting the end of winter for close to five years and before that, his father Chuck G. Hogg Sr. did the same.
"Chuck has been on a roll recently," says Staten Island Zoo General Curator Peter Laline. "But even when he makes a mistake, the kids — and adults too — love him. He's a great teaching opportunity and reminds people to return to the zoo."
This is not a responsibility that Chuck takes lightly. Just ask Mayor Bloomberg, whose finger Chuck nibbled on two years ago during the city's Groundhog Day ceremony.
Chuck and his family have predicted the end of winter weather accurately 23 out of the last 30 years.
The process is very simple. If Chuck peeks his head out of his home at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 2 and sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, spring will arrive early.
The Groundhog Day tradition began in the 1800s with the influx of German immigrants who believed that hibernating creatures were able to predict the arrival of springtime.
Just as important as Chuck's forecasting skills is his social disposition. Despite the biting incident with Bloomberg, he is uncommonly friendly for a groundhog.
"Chuck is the ultimate professional," says Laline, who admits the pressure on Chuck is even greater this year due to the harsh, snowy winter. "He's not only good at predicting the weather, but he's also used to a lot of human interaction.
"Groundhogs are not domesticated animals and have sharp nails and teeth. They don't like to be picked up. But Chuck is used to the public eye."
Of course, Chuck, who weighs 10 pounds and loves corn and peanuts, isn't one simply to follow in the footsteps of his father. He recently became the first green groundhog in the world by living in a wireless log cabin complete with a weather station that uses renewable energy from the sun.
Now that he has moved into a bigger home, Chuck might even be looking to give up the bachelor life. In order to lure the right partner, he recently took to the Staten Island Zoo's Facebook page to clean up his public image.
In a video posted on YouTube, he shrugs off the great biting incident of 2009 and calls Bloomberg his "good friend."
As for a sneak peek of his prediction, Staten Island Chuck refuses to tip his hand.
"We all want winter to end early this year," says Laline, "but Chuck predicts the weather, he doesn't control it."

Imbolc
I almost forgot about this!!!! I know it's February 1st, but being buried up to my witch's tit's in snow, it's hard to think of spring!!!!

Stones of Imbolc:

My ceremonies is the same every year. I take the Acorns I gathered in the fall, and place them in my cauldron and burn them... usually do this outside.... and after they finish burning, I peer into the cauldron and see if the ash's left any symbols for me to interpret!
Will I be able to do it this year? I'm NOT going out in the snow to burn ANYTHING!!! So maybe I'll settle for making a corn dolly, and raising praise for a good crop of veggies this year!
Wiccan Sabbat of Imbolc - Celebrate Imbolc with these Spells and rituals to celebrate the reawakening of the earth and to manifest desires. The Wiccan Festival of Imbolc is time of renewal!
•A white cloth left outside on the Eve of Imbolc may be brought inside in the morning having been blessed by the Goddess.
•Lighting many white candles to celebrate the strengthening light of the season.
•Suitable Wiccan Incenses to burn at Imbolc include lavender, cinnamon, basil, frankincense and myrrh. Open windows for a few minutes to air the home, and then allow the fragrant smoke to permeate the home. The cleansing smoke will quicken the mood of all those that experience it, and this atmosphere of renewal will remain long after the smoke has dispersed.
•Drinking fresh milk from a magical chalice. Traditionally animals began to provide much needed fresh milk around Imbolc, a very welcome and practical sign of the renewal of the wheel of the year!
Wiccan Sabbat of Imbolc is a Time to Tidy and to Set Things in Order
•Spring clean the home, focusing especially on sacred and special spaces such as a Wiccan Home Altar.
•As well as tidying home, it is a good time to sort out any outstanding matters such as returning borrowed items, replying to neglected friends and family members and offering simple acts of kindness.
•Imbolc is a good time to begin inner spiritual work, perhaps by beginning a program of meditation or learning new magical skills.

Fifty sure-fire ways to detect paganism without having to resort to a dunking stool or wart-inspection.
1) Never puts any rubbish out on refuse-collection day. I mean, re-cycling and composting is fine, but you can take it too far.
2) You casually ask what phase the moon is in, and she tells you down to the exact number of days, hour and minute of rising, position on horizon, and current angle of declination.
3) All the stray cats in the neighbourhood tend to congregate in her garden (and use your own as their litter).
4) A screech owl has chosen the lamp-post outside her house as its favorite calling-post. That's just when it's getting warm at night and you like to sleep with the window open.
5) Doesn't cut down the weeds in her garden; in fact it looks more like she's cultivating them. Needless to say, you get the seeds wafting over onto your pristine lawn.
6) Most of her clothes on the washing line are black.
7) The local kids talk in whispers as they go past her house, then start running at the last moment.
8) Nobody trick-or-treats her house; not after the incident when the kids' costumes were less scary than hers when she opened the door to them. (She was embracing the Crone that year no doubt!)
9) Footprints on the roof. And the trees in her flight-path have been pruned down. I swear it's true!
10) She can't even make a simple sandwich without adding fresh herbs to it. And don't ask her for a cup of tea unless you want something yellow coloured and smelling of flowers.
11) She hardly ever gets junk mail. You ask her what her secret is and she confides that she returns it to sender after writing something on in strange curly writing.
12) When you pop next door for a chat, the kettle is always already on.
13) The Jehovah's Witnesses never call (not anymore; not after the last time :-).
14) Keeps the local scented-candle shop solvent.
15) Has a pond full of frogs (and you haven't seen that bothersome double-glazing salesman around for a while).
16) She's always smiling, darn her!
17) She goes dressed as normal to a Hallowe'en fancy dress party; and wins first prize.
18) Her house always smells of incense.
19) Has named her four cats Hecate, Kali, Diana, and Moonbeam. (Or her rats Devon and Cornwall)
20) Her bumper sticker reads "I brake for toads".
21) Frequently gets raided by the drug squad who confiscate large amounts of dried green leaves; they always return them with apologies after analysis.
22) At Christmas, it seems like half the garden has been moved into the house.
23) You sometimes hear the sound of singing and dancing through the wall. If you look out of the window, it is usually a full moon.
24) She was given a bodhram drum for her birthday. And she plays it at midnight in the fields. And she's got a blasted tamborine.
25) You discover that her realistic resin skull ornament in her living room, actually is real.
26) You catch her washing a crystal ball along with the dishes.
27) She wears a lot of silver jewelry, even when doing the gardening. And bat ear-rings for goodness-sake.
28) You knock on her door and she answers it naked except for a toweling robe. You apologize for disturbing her in the bath, but notice that her hair isn't wet.
29) Irritating tendency to hum a lot. What's she got to be so happy about, huh?
30) She has a tame robin that will eat from her hand in the garden. That can't be natural.
31) Never catches a cold, even though she walks barefoot most of the time. In the snow as well.
32) Doesn't kill spiders. Not even big hairy long-legged ones that suddenly appear from the waste-pipe whilst you're having a bath.
33) She listens to what you are saying like she really cares.
34) She has lots of female friends who come round every few months. When you ask what they get up to, she tells you that they just have cakes and ale and a good natter.
35) You catch her hugging a tree.
36) Her dinner-set is decorated with Celtic patterns.
37) She has a mail-order account with a semi-precious gem wholesaler.
38) You notice that the parish priest crosses himself whenever he walks past her house.
39) She never watches television. And she has shelves full of books with black spines and silver-lettered titles.
40) To your certain knowledge she has never set foot in the local church. In fact, you have heard rumours that she has been barred from it.
41) She makes jars of quince and mandrake relish for the Women's Institute coffee morning jumble sale.
42) You ask to borrow a pack of cards for an impromptu bridge evening, and there are 78 in the pack.
43) You have never known her to visit her GP.
44) When you talk with her, she maintains eye contact all the time.
45) Expectant mothers are forever visiting her. Also women who become expectant mothers a month after visiting her.
46) You ask her for suggestions for nice walks in the area, and they all go by way of stone circles and strange earth mounds.
47) She only buys organic. And you just bet that she's a vegetarian as well. (Well, maybe not stricly vegetarian....)
48) When you ask her about her vacation plans, she tells you she will be camping in a tee-pee in the Brecon Beacons.
49) There aren't any mirrors in her house. Or clocks.
50) She tells you that she is coming out of the broom closet, joins Witches' Voice, and erects a stained-glass pentacle window in her front door . Ooo what a give-away!

Reveling
Such a strange word.... but I'm doing it!!!
I haven't posted much in the last few days because I'm REVELING, being ALONE!!!
Quietly though, just walking around my nice quiet house, doing WHAT I want to do, WHEN I want to do it, and ANYWAY I want to do it!
THE BOY IS BACK AT SCHOOL!!!!!

revel·er, revel·ler n.
I actually called and took off to see a Dermatologist yesterday. (and I didn't have to call from my bathroom, or tell ANYONE where I was going!!!!) But I'm telling you guys.
I developed these things under my eyes this year. My Mom and Dad both had them. They are caused by high cholesterol, and they are UGLY! Yellow, chicken skin colored, blotch's under my eyes.
I know people who had them removed, so I called the doc, and off I went....
I found out I also had Roasia on my cheeks... had no clue, just thought they were spider veins... but I got a cream for that, and that and the appointment was covered with my insurance..... removing the yellow fat pockets isn't.... RATS!
But she told me I needed 3 treatments, at $150-$175 dollars each, and my consultation appointment isn't till March.... and income tax check should be here before that.... so I'm going for it.
Not that I'm really that vain, and I didn't even notice them.... till someone else did... and I figured "fuck it!!!" So I'll be a tiny bit vain and get rid of them. GIGGLE
Not that I'm real excited about having ACID brushed on my under eye area!!!! But, like I said, I know people who had it done, and they say it's worth it!
So, I'm gonna be vain for once in my life! OH OH OH, I can REVEL in it!!!!!

As I promised
I kept telling people about my family cemetery, and promising to get a pic for you guys... but the cemetery is a pain in the tush to get too, and, admittedly, every time I was down there I tended to forget!
BUT THIS TIME I DIDN'T FORGET!!! So here is the tombstone at the front entrance to my family's cemetery!!
I should mention another weird thing.... It has no dates or names on it, besides the last name... and it's from the 1930's yet is in fantastic shape!

Sigh!
My computer died!!!! No reason at all, just refused to turn on one morning, and nothing my son could do would bring the poor baby back!!!!!!
So, he tinkered with some stuff in his closet... AND BUILT ME A NEW COMPUTER!!!!
WHOOOOOOOOO HEEEEEEEE!!!!
It's better then the old one.... don't bother asking me rams and shit, cause I don't know... I'm just telling you what "HE" told me!
The unfortunately thing is that all my stuff.... AND I MEAN ALL MY STUFF... from the old computer was lost!!!!
Now that's not too bad, cause for the pics and stuff I had made disks.... but my FAVORITE PLACES???? GONE!!!!!
In other words, I couldn't even find my own freaking BLOG!!!!!!!
Let alone all the other sites I visit on a regular day!!!!!
So, yesterday and today I spent hunting, and googling, and guessing, and swearing, and gritting my teeth.... till I found almost everything.
How bad would it be if I couldn't even find my own blog???? GADS!!!!
But I managed, and then took all the links, and put them in a note pad, and printed them out.... JUST IN CASE THIS SHIT HAPPENS AGAIN!!!!
So... I'm fine.... new computer is fine.... my nerves are warn thin... and they boy managed to teach me a few new curse words that I had never heard before... while he was putting together a new computer.
And I'm TOTALLY thankful that he was home on winter break when it happened... cause that's the ONLY reason I'm back on line!!!!

YUCK!
I have to admit, after fighting it for a couple of weeks.... I joined the rest of you in being sick!
I knew I was getting a sinus infection, and I tried to stave it off with salt spray, and heat... but to no avail..... it eventually worked it way into my ears... and chaos ensued.
Giggle... well, maybe not chaos, but a raging double ear infection added to the original sinus infection.
So, off I went, after 3 weeks of trying to cure it on my own, to the doctors.... and now I'm starting to feel a little better!
I haven't wanted to go on line, even to post... but I'm getting better.... and NO, I didn't forget to announce when the contest for the goodie basket ends.... I just haven't decided when I'll be well enough to hit the post office!
I'll let you know in a couple of days who won! Promise!
Now I'm off to bed again, and a good snuggle, and some meds, and I'm sure I'll be better in a few days!

Quinoa
Back at the beginning of December I mentioned this Seed I heard of....Quinoa.
I hadn't tried it yet, because to tell you the truth, this allergy thing has gotten me soooooooo increasingly depressed.... that even though I'm still following the "allergy reduction diet", I find myself unwilling to try new things to test..... basically because I seem to be allergic to EVERYTHING!
And I just don't want to test for new things because I'm sure I'll be allergic to them too!!!!!!!
But I had to try Quinoa. I'm allergic to rice, and the flour in noodles, so that left me with NOTHING!!! BAH!!!! So, I put off trying the Quinoa, even thought I bought it.
Finally, yesterday, I tried it! NO ALLERGY REACTION!!!! WHHHHHOOOOOO HHOOOOOOO!!!!!!
And it's actually GOOD! So easy to make, you rinse it off with water, and add 1 cup of the quinoa to 2 cups water.... just like making rice.... and bring it to a boil, and let it simmer till the water is gone.
I had it hot, with butter, sugar and a little milk. And speaking as an oatmeal lover (who can't eat oatmeal anymore) It was a fantastic substitute!!!! Nutty, hot and delicious!!!!
My inner body hummed with contentment after eating it. Maybe it was the fact that it has the same protein as meat, or maybe it was just having some kind of breakfast food.... I don't know, but it was good.... and, unlike a lot of substitutes that I've tried, it didn't take getting use to.... it was just GOOD!
I get so tired of telling people who ask about the stuff I substitute for real food, that it's "adequate", or "It'll do" this one doesn't need that, cause it actually very good!
I'm very excited about exploring the different ways of using it. I can use it like rice, or make salads with it, and it's good sweet, and savory.... just like rice, it has many use's, but it's not a grain, it's a nut!!!
I'm glad I took a chance with this, it's a tad expensive, but a cup of it cooks up into about 4 cups, and it stores in Tupperware without getting hard, so It works out in the end of being very good item for the value!!
Those of you with gluten problem, TRY IT!!! No gluten!!!!
